Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore has called on the four independent TDs who have been backing the Government to support his party's motion of no confidence in Minister for Health Mary Harney in the Dail this week.

Deputies Finian McGrath, Beverley Flynn, Jackie Healy Rae and Michael Lowry have all ben supporting the Government in the Dáil.

They will be faced with a clear choice of standing up for the women who have been so badly let down by our health service or voting confidence in the Minister who has presided over this shambles

Mr McGrath has said he is "hopping mad" with the way women have been treated in the Portlaoise breast cancer crisis. He said he is by no means certain to vote with the Government on Wednesday's motion.

"I welcome the reported comments of Deputy Finian McGrath that he is considering what position to adopt on our motion and I hope that the other three Independents will do likewise," Mr Gilmore said today.

"Nobody any longer expects the Green Party to take an independent stand on anything as they have clearly decided that they will stick with Fianna Fáil for the lifetime of this Dáil, no matter what happens.

"However, the vote on Wednesday night will provide an opportunity for deputies McGrath, Flynn, Lowry and Healy Rae to demonstrate whether or not they are genuinely 'independent'."

"They will be faced with a clear choice of standing up for the women who have been so badly let down by our health service or voting confidence in the Minister who has presided over this shambles."

Mr Gilmore said the Portlaoise "debacle" had been "one of the most shocking failures ever in our health service".

"If the principle of political responsibility is to mean anything, then the Dáil must hold the Minister for Health to account by voting no confidence in her."
