The Olympic qualification deadline for Athens passed at 5 p.m. with no further athletes being added to the 48 strong Irish team.
Nick Sweeney, however, is set to join the athletics team having thrown 64.12 metres in the discus in the United States earlier this month.
Athletics Ireland are awaiting official documentation on that throw which will make Sweeney's addition to the team a formality.
The problem existed as Sweeney achieved the distance at a minor meeting outside Boston. The event was organised by New England Track and Field and it needed to forward documentation to US Track and Field, who then had to pass it to the IAAF.
Javelin thrower Terry McHugh is not so fortunate, however, as his efforts at Belfield this afternoon failed to secure the necessary 'A' stand qualifying mark to reach Athens.
The 48 qualified competitors are spread among nine different sports with Athletics boasting the largest number with 13.
The make-up of the remaining sports is: Equestrian 10, Sailing 9, Rowing 6, Cycling 4, Canoeing 2, Swimming 2, Boxing 1 and Shooting 1.
The total number is considerably less than the Sydney Games in 2000 when almost 70 athletes travelled.
This year's team is also the smallest squad in two decades despite an increase in Government funding towards this project.
