A teenager was killed early today when the car he was travelling in crashed into a ditch.

A teenager was killed early today when the car he was travelling in crashed into a ditch.

The incident occurred just after midnight on a minor road at Ballyhack near Ashbourne, Co Meath. The 17-year-old, a passenger in the car, was taken by ambulance to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan where he was pronounced dead.

The driver and a second passenger, both male and aged in their late teens, were not injured.

The road was closed for a technical examination, and gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Ashbourne Garda Station on 01-8010600, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Elsewhere, gardaí in Blackrock are appealing for witnesses after a male pedestrian in his late 20s was struck by a car on the N11. The incident happened at about 3.40am at Blake’s Cross, Stillorgan.

The man was taken by Ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital where his condition is described as critical. The driver of the motor car was not injured.

The northbound lanes of the N11 dual carriageway, are currently closed from Blake’s Cross to the Old Dublin Road, and traffic diversions are in place. Anyone with information is asked to contact Blackrock Garda Station 01 6665200, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Yesterday, two people died in crashes involving motorbikes in the west of the country.

In Co Mayo, a 30-year-old woman died after the bike on which she was a passenger hit a sign at Clootumper, Ballyhaunis, shortly after 2am. The 26-year-old male driver was taken to Castlebar hospital.

Elsewhere, a man was pronounced dead at the scene of a motorbike creash on a minor road at Cahercon, Kinvarra, Co Galway, at 12.25pm. His remains were taken to University College Hospital Galway.
