Teenager drowns in Galway lake

A teenager died while swimming in a lake with friends in Carraroe, Co Galway, yesterday

A teenager died while swimming in a lake with friends in Carraroe, Co Galway, yesterday. The tragedy occurred in a small lake near Carraroe parish church shortly after 4 p.m. The 16year-old was from the village. His remains were removed to University College Hospital Galway.

Meanwhile, gardai have released the name of the 78-year-old man who drowned on Thursday night when his punt overturned at Courtmacsherry Bay, Cork. He was Mr John O'Connor, from Kilbrittain, west Cork.

Mr O'Connor and another man had stood up in the punt to board a boat when it overturned and they were thrown into the water. The other man survived.

In a third drowning, the body of a man who went missing while fishing on the Gweebara River in Co Donegal on Tuesday night was recovered late on Thursday. He was Mr Billy Roche, a bus driver in his late 50s. His body was discovered near the townland of Cleengort.
