A teenager was tonight recovering in hospital after he was shot in both ankles in a paramilitary style attack in West Belfast.

Police were called to Glenalina Gardens in the Ballymurphy area at around 6 p.m. after the 19-year-old male suffered gunshot wounds to both ankles.

The RUC said when its officers arrived at the scene they were attacked by youths throwing fireworks and stones.

An appeal for information about tonight's incident was issued by police in Belfast's Grosvenor Road RUC station.
