A Limerick teenager who drove in a "highly dangerous" manner through a city housing estate while children were out playing has been jailed for three months.

Liam Kelly (19), College Avenue, Moyross, Limerick, failed to stop for gardaí who were on patrol in the St Mary's Park area of the city on August 21st last.

The teenager drove at high speed along St Brendan's Street and failed to stop at two junctions before swerving on to a driveway at Oliver Plunkett Street in St Mary's Park.

According to gardaí, who described the defendant's driving as "highly dangerous", the offence took place at 6.50pm on a fine evening when there were a lot of children out playing.

The State argued that Mr Kelly had no consideration for the children, whom he could have harmed.

Defence solicitor John Herbert said his client had not realised he was driving in a dangerous manner.

Kelly pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving and to a charge of driving with no insurance at Limerick District Court.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy jailed him for a total of three months and disqualified him from driving for a year.
