The girl had been staying with family at a nearby caravan park.

Meanwhile, rescue services were called to the assistance of a mountain-climber at Carrauntoohil in the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountains in Co Kerry yesterday afternoon.

The man, a German tourist in his early 50s in a party of three, got into difficulties in the notorious Devil's Ladder area.

Coming down the mountain, he tripped and fell three metres and sustained facial and rib injuries. Conditions were described as wet and windy at the time.

The Shannon Marine Rescue helicopter was called out, but was unable to reach him, and 18 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue team were airlifted on to the mountain.

The man was brought down on a stretcher and airlifted to Tralee General Hospital.

Last night his injuries were said to be serious, but not life-threatening.
