Spain’s Telefónica, which owns mobile network O2 Ireland, is to create 100 jobs in Dublin as part of the €25 million investment in a pan-European human resources base.

The people services centre will handle human resources, support and administration for Telefonica's
27,900 employees across Europe in their respective local languages.

The jobs should be in place by the end of 2012 at the O2 offices at O2 Ireland's Dublin docklands office on Sir John Rogerson's Quay.

Tasoieach Brian Cowen described the investment "highly significant", saying the posts were "high calibre jobs".

"I can assure Telefónica that Ireland will continue to invest heavily in education and training for its people to ensure a continuous supply of skilled employees ... thereby enabling them to develop and grow their businesses here," he said.

Minister for Enterprise Batt O'Keeffe said the move signalled Ireland was "open for business and winning major foreign direct investments".

"We have demonstrated yet again to the global investment community that Ireland continues to attract high-quality foreign direct investments in these difficult times for the world economy," Mr O'Keeffe said.

"As Ireland emerges from recession and returns to growth, these investments play a key role in rebuilding our confidence as a nation and proving to the world that Ireland is open for business," he added.
