A minibus collided with a truck carrying steel bars north of Cairo today, killing 10 people, including a three-year-old boy, and injuring 11.
All the injured were in critical condition and have been moved to hospitals in the Delta town of Benha, where the accident occurred, the state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported today.
Police said the minibus driver was driving at high speed and lost control of the vehicle, which veered and slammed into the truck, MENA reported.
Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions lead to a high accident toll in Egypt.
A series of crashes in recent years caused a public outcry over the government's record of road and transport safety. A new traffic code with tougher punishments for lawbreakers came into effect at the start of August.
