British supermarket chain Tesco has made its first move into the gardening market with a £155.6 million (€229.39 million) bid for Britain's Dobbies Garden Centres.
The 1,500-pence-a-share deal would bring on board environmentally friendly products such as solar panel heating and water management devices, developing Tesco's non-food offering, the company said.
Dobbies - Britain's third biggest garden centre chain with 21 stores in England and Scotland - said it would continue a pre-planned expansion plan backed by Tesco.
Tesco - which made profits of £2.5 billion in its last financial year - has been expanding internationally and into new products to continue its rapid rate of growth.
