Nearly a third of the staff at a new 24-hour Tesco outlet on the northside of Dublin will come from an scheme for the long-term unemployed.

Ms Fiona Nolan, Employment Programme & Enterprise Manager from the Northside Partnership, told ireland.comthat Tesco approached them offering up to 100 jobs at its new outlet in a move similar to employment regeneration schemes" run by the company in Britain.

To prepare the new staff, 65 have been enrolled on a 20-week training course with workshops on retail skills and numeracy, in addition to in-store training. The remaining 35 posts in the program will be filled by long-term unemployed who do not require such pre-workplace training.

The new Tesco centre will open on July 19th and will employ 350 people.

"I hope that other employers, both in retail and other sectors, planning to recruit on the north side of Dublin in the future will mirror the Tesco model and play their part in reducing the number of people on the live register," Ms Nolan said.

She added that it was intended that some of those joining Tesco under this scheme would be selected for the company's in-store management training programmes.
