Tesco Ireland will invest €100 million in new stores in Ireland this year bringing the supermarket group’s total investment to €500 million in the past five years, the group said.

Tesco Ireland reported an 8.9 per cent rise in sales to €1,661 million in the year to February 23rd which the company said reflects the buoyant condition of the Irish economy for much of the year.

Tesco said the four new stores it opened in Ireland last year - Killarney, Newbridge, Tralee and Clearwater are "surpassing trading expectations".

Tesco extended its internet shopping service to Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and Kerry from its initial markets in the main cities. The service has over 40,000 registered users.
