The East Timor Ireland Solidarity Campaign has called on the EU to dispatch an observer team to the territory following the renewed killing of civilians, writes Joe Humphreys.
Mr Tom Hyland, the group's co-ordinator, said: "This latest outrage confirms the Indonesian government has no intention of stopping the genocidal campaign which began with the invasion of East Timor almost 23 years ago. There is a moral obligation on the EU to immediately impose a weapons embargo on Indonesia and send a human rights mission to East Timor."
He said recent investigations have shown that British-made armoured personnel carriers and water cannon are used in Indonesia and East Timor for crowd control. Other EU countries are responsible for supplying the Indonesian military with equipment.
