As MEPs held a minute's silence in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales and Mother Teresa, President Jose-Maria Gil-Robles paid tribute to their work on behalf of the underprivileged. The President sent a message of sympathy to Queen Elizabeth expressing his condolences in which he wrote: "The tragic loss of Diana, Princess of Wales, has come as an immense shock to those she knew and to all those who were touched by her generosity of spirit. The thoughts of all Europe rest with your family, particularly with her two sons, Prince William and Prince Henry. We trust that the legacy of human kindness Diana, Princess of Wales, created will live on."
In later adopting a resolution welcoming progress towards achieving a ban on antipersonnel mines, MEPs praised the work of Diana, Princess of Wales, in campaigning for a worldwide ban.
