The Southern Health Board in Cork said the strike was continuing to cause severe disruption throughout its region, which includes Kerry.

As at the weekend, Cork University Hospital, St Mary's Orthopaedic hospital, and Mallow, Tralee and Bantry general hospitals were functioning with a minimum of staff and with widespread bed closures.

However, the appeal to the public not to go to hospitals except in cases of absolute emergency seems to have been successful.

In the Cork area doctors said there had been an increase in the number of people calling to their clinics for routine matters such as dressings for wounds.

One doctor on the north of Cork city, Dr Ronan Gleeson, said: "I have had a few calls over the weekend that perhaps I would not have had normally, but generally things have not become as hectic as might have been expected. Colleagues are saying the same thing.

"I think people are dealing with minor problems themselves rather than going to hospital or asking for help from their doctors."
