Forty years ago, the intrepid souls who dared to bring an adaptation of J. P. Donleavy's notorious novel The Ginger Man to Dublin's Gaiety stage received the come-uppance due to their irreverence. The show closed, after only three performances, due to the choreographed public outrage at - what else - its sexual content. Richard Harris, who played Sebastian Dangerfield, the eponymous hero, departed in dudgeon, high or low, in search of a less trammelled career abroad. He is succeeded, in the first new production here for 25 years, by David Murray (left), who is unlikely to be railroaded out of town. The Dublin Theatre Company opens the revival on July 13th at the New Theatre, Essex Street, when we may re-examine our theatrical consciences.
