Probably the cream of the crop of Sean O'Casey's great trilogy, Juno and the Paycock is certainly worthy of celebration on the 75th anniversary of its Abbey Theatre premiere. The year 1986 saw the extraordinary Gate Theatre production directed by Joe Dowling, with a cast which included names to conjure with; the late Donal McCann, John Kavanagh, Maureen Potter and others. The word definitive is not one to throw around lightly, but this may have been it. The new production opening in the Gaiety Theatre next Thursday may, however, have something to say about that. The producer is Noel Pearson, and the actors include (above, from left) Michael Gambon, Marie Mullen, John Kavanagh (again) and Brid Brennan. Garry Hynes, fresh from her Broadway triumphs, directs.
