The best of comedy subjects society, in its infinite manifestations, to a satirical commentary

The best of comedy subjects society, in its infinite manifestations, to a satirical commentary. Trevor Griffith's Comedians brings off the neat double of putting comedy itself under the spotlight in order to comment on contemporary issues. First produced in 1975, it remains his best-known and most popular work, and was recently voted one of the 100 most important plays of the century in a project undertaken by England's National Theatre. An impressive cast has been assembled by the Kilkenny-based Bickerstaffe company to play the six aspirant comedians under the cosh of ambition, their seasoned tutorguru and others. The production, which has opened as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, continues in Andrews Lane Theatre to the end of this month. Aidan Kelly (left) plays Connors in the production.
