Over 30 jobs will be created in Tullamore, Co Offaly by British biotechnology company GeneMedix, it was announced today.

The company will establish its European manufacturing centre, incorporating development and technical support capability, in Tullamore following the conclusion of discussions with IDA Ireland.

The project will involve investment of £5.7 million and is expected to create up to 30 jobsduring the initial start-up phase.

The Tullamore plant will make components used in the company's drug, Erythropoietin which is used for the treatment of anaemia, particularly in patients with chronic renal failure.

Genemedixwas established in 1997 to research and develop low cost, high-value, proteins. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange last year.

The company's first manufacturing facility was set up in China, with Tullamore being its second facility.
