Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson admits he has given up hope of impressing Sven-Goran Eriksson enough to ever play for England.

Eriksson has been keeping tabs on the Hoops star - who has emerged as one of the Parkhead side's top players over the last two seasons - and had him watched against Dundee United.

But Thompson's name was missing from the squad for the friendly against Portugal and he has now decided to forget international football on the same day that team-mate Chris Sutton admitted he had written off his own chances of winning a call up.

Thompson told Scotland Today: "I've pushed it to one side and I'm just going to concentrate on my job here at Celtic and not worry about what's happening elsewhere.

"We're looking forward to a successful finish to the season with Celtic and a nice summer holiday with our families."

When asked if he thought playing in the Bank of Scotland Premier League had hampered his chances, Thompson added: "That would have to be for someone at the FA or Sven to answer personally but I'm still playing at a massive club and playing European football in the Champions League and UEFA Cup finals."
