Earlier this year, Salaam newspaper in Tehran published this summary of Article 4 of Iran's dress code, which considers the following to be "vulgar" and an offence:
Thin or short headscarves that do not cover the hair and neck
Men's jackets or trousers worn by a woman
Blouses and skirts worn without a coat
Short coats above the knee or clothing with short sleeves having various motifs or decorated with emblems, arrows, signs or brand names or images on the collar, upper or lower parts of the coat
Shorts
Socks that are transparent, made of lace, in bright colours, fluorescent, with prints representing vulgar images or special motifs
Also forbidden are accessories like: hats, necklaces, earrings, belts (fluorescent, with gold decorations etc), bracelets, dark glasses, caps or headbands, rings, bags, men's scarves (worn by women), ties, beads, vulgar and ridiculous images such as the heads of rabbits or eagles (symbols of fashionable punk groups), images of Rocky and Rambo, swastikas, foreign flags, red stars.
Also forbidden are vulgar foreign symbols on clothing, such as the thumbs-up, the V for victory, photos of Iranian or foreign actors symbolising violence, sex or vulgarity.
In view of the importance of the battle against the cultural invasion, article 640 of the Muslim penal code states that persons violating these rules may be sentenced to from three months to one year in prison, a fine of 1.5 to 6 million riyals (£300 to £1,200) and 74 lashes with the whip.
