TWO YOUNG men and one woman were killed on the roads over the weekend.
The 42-year-old woman was seriously injured in a three-vehicle collision on the N59 at Recess, Co Galway at about 5 pm yesterday and died later in hospital. The occupants in the other vehicles were uninjured
Gardaí in Bailieboro, Co Cavan, appealed for information about what appears to have been a fatal hit-and-run incident on the Carrickmacross Road out of Kingscourt between 2am and 2pm on Saturday.
The incident occurred when pedestrian Johnathon Heagney (26), Aughnagar, Galbally, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, was hit by an unknown vehicle that failed to stop.
His body was removed to Navan hospital for a postmortem, which revealed that his death was as a result of injuries sustained in a road traffic incident.
The victim was discovered on Saturday afternoon hours after he had left a local hotel on the main road between Kingscourt, Co Cavan, and Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.
It is understood he was visiting the area with friends and had been at the Cabra Castle Hotel in Kingscourt on Friday, but left the hotel in the early hours of Saturday.
Local sources said the man left the hotel at about 2am on Saturday. He was struck by a car a mile and a half from the hotel as he walked along the Kingscourt Road in the direction of Carrickmacross Road.
It appears that friends of the man launched a search for him when he did not return and found his body at about 2.30pm on Saturday. Gardaí were then called to the scene.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information in relation to a dark red/maroon Audi-type car that may have been in the area at the time of the incident and may have been damaged, to contact them at Bailieboro Garda station at 042 9694570.
Gardaí at Kinvara, Co Galway, are investigating a single-vehicle fatal incident at Ruanmore near Ardrahan shortly after midnight on Saturday.
A 26-year-old man, died when the van he was driving went out of control and hit a ditch.
