Two of three workers injured in an early-morning explosion at a sweet factory in north Dublin remain in hospital this evening.

Dublin Fire Brigade said the explosion happened at 6.55am at Dunhills Confectionery on McKee Avenue, Finglas.

The three men were taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown. One has been released, while one other man is understood to be in a critical condition.

Chris Shaw, director, Dunhills Confectionary Production, said: "Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of our colleagues who were injured this morning.

"Our first priority at the moment is to the well-being of the injured members of staff as well as the rest of the team in Dublin who are obviously very shaken by today's incident."

The company issued a statement saying the cause of the accident, which took place in the boilerhouse at the factory, is not yet known.

A Fire Brigade spokesman said the explosion might have been caused by a gas boiler that was being worked on.

The statement said it was helping the Health & Safety Authority with its investigation.

The site has been closed and employees have been sent home until further notice.
