Three people were injured as four small bombs exploded at businesses in the Basque region of northern Spain today.
The bombings came a day after the government proposed talks with ETA if it abandoned violence.
Two Basque policemen and a security guard were wounded after one of the bombs damaged a deposit of highly toxic acid, creating a poisonous cloud. The three men were taken to hospital for treatment, state radio said.
Spain's ruling Socialist party announced yesterday it would seek parliamentary support for a proposal to start talks with ETA if it abandons its weapons, prompting an outcry from the centre-right opposition Popular Party.
ETA, ranked a terrorist group by the European Union, has killed more than 800 people since 1968 in a campaign for an independent Basque state carved from north Spain and southwest France.
