The four occupants of the car were not seriously injured in the crash.

The N21 was reopened to traffic following a technical examination.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Newcastle West Garda station at 069 20650.

The deaths bring to 150 the number of people killed on the country’s roads this year, official Garda figures show.

Labour’s transport spokesman Joe Costello said last night’s crash and recent incidents in Donegal and Kerry showed the need for greater enforcement of traffic laws.

It is especially important that the rules surrounding seat belts and obeying speed limits are properly enforced,” he said. “The Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, needs to address a range of outstanding road safety issues including the national speed camera rollout, speed signage and limits, and the Graduated Driver License Scheme together with the recently published proposals from the Road Safety Authority.
