Three killed in separate road crashes

Three people, including a 12-year-old boy, have been killed on the State's roads over the past 24 hours.

Three people, including a 12-year-old boy, have been killed on the State's roads over the past 24 hours.

The boy was killed when he was hit by a truck on Main Street, Mountrath, Co Laois at around 2.30pm. His body was  taken to Portlaoise Hospital.

In Gorey, Co Wexford, a 19-year-old man died after his bicycle was hit by a car in Courtown Harbour at around 10.30 pm last night.

Gardaí have preserved the scene for technical examination.

Ballinasloe gardaí are also investigating a fatal collision that occurred at around 7.00pm last night at Gortnaglogh, Kilconnell, Co Galway.

A 41-year-old woman was fatally injured when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed. There were no other vehicles involved.

The woman  was removed to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe where a postmortem is due to take place.

The deaths bring the number of those killed on the State's roads this year to 172.
