A three-year-old Co Fermanagh girl died in hospital in Dublin yesterday after suffering extensive burns when her nightdress caught fire before Christmas.

Medical staff at Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin had fought for weeks to save her.

Rebecca Johnston suffered burns on the evening of December 11th when her nightdress was set on fire by a candle in her home outside Enniskillen.

She was taken initially to the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen with her mother, who suffered burns to her hands as she frantically tried to beat out the flames.

Later it was decided Rebecca needed specialist treatment and she was taken by ambulance to Dublin with a PSNI escort to the Border and Garda escort the rest of the way.

The PSNI said yesterday it had been told by the Garda that the girl had died in Our Lady's Children's Hospital. The Dublin coroner is to investigate the death and the PSNI said it would provide him with whatever assistance he required.
