Thunder leads to widespread flooding

Widespread thunderstorms yesterday were accompanied by heavy rain and flooding in many areas throughout the country

Widespread thunderstorms yesterday were accompanied by heavy rain and flooding in many areas throughout the country. Met Eireann reported a band of thunder extending in a line across the island from northwest to south-east.

Some areas, particularly in the north-east and south-west, escaped, a spokeswoman said. The heaviest rainfall occurred mainly in north Leinster, particularly Dublin, where many areas had severe flooding. About 12.2 millimetres of rain were recorded at Dublin Airport.

The northern half of the country was affected. Clones, Co Monaghan, had a reading of 13.2 millimetres. The thunderstorms and rain moved eastwards during the night, extending across Leinster to the south-east.

In the west, Mayo had a lot of rain yesterday, but this was due more to "widespread wet conditions" than thunderstorms, Met Eireann said. Flooding was localised, however, with Knock Airport recording seven millimetres compared with three millimetres at Belmullet.

The "very active area" of rain and thunder was set to clear eastwards by this morning but the threat of some showers in local areas remains.

Met Eireann predicted today would in general be more settled in those areas most affected yesterday, but warned that the west and south of the country might experience heavy thunder and torrential rain with a risk of flooding.
