'Times' of London to publish US edition

Rupert Murdoch's London-based Times newspaper will publish a US edition next month.

"We have seen a large increase in our Times Online readership in the US and the appearance of the newspaper on the streets of New York marks the next stage in our print and web expansion," Timeseditor Robert Thompson said.

The launch is set for June 6th, the week the soccer World Cup kicks off in Germany, and the US edition will be printed at facilities owned by News Corp stablemate the New York Post.

The US edition of the Times, with a $1 cover price, will join the Financial Timesand a weekly edition of the Guardianas British newspapers publishing in the United States.

Mr Thompson was responsible for a major US expansion of the Financial Timeswhen he worked at the Pearson-owned paper.

The Timesis the second-best selling "quality" newspaper in Britain, behind its arch-rival the Telegraph, owned by the Barclay brothers.
