A member of the Tipperary senior inter-county hurling panel is helping gardaí with their inquiries into an alleged serious assault in Thurles on Monday night.
Mr Ger (Redser) O'Grady and another man walked voluntarily into Thurles station yesterday morning to help gardaí in their investigations into the incident.
A 25-year-old man from the Childers Park area of the town was seriously injured in an assault, which took place in Cúchulainn Road between midnight and 1 a.m.
The incident occurred following Tipperary's defeat by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland hurling semi-final in Croke Park on Sunday.
Emergency services brought the man to Cashel Hospital and he was later transferred to Cork's University College Hospital.
The man remains in a critical condition after sustaining severe head injuries in the incident.
Mr O'Grady (24), a father of one child, is a member of Thurles Sarsfields GAA club and has featured on the under-age inter-county scene for a number of years.
He also played for the senior side this year making a number of appearances as a substitute.
Thurles-based Garda Insp Bernard O'Neill confirmed yesterday that gardaí had interviewed two men in relation to the incident but he said they were still looking for witnesses.
"Two people are aiding us with our investigations.
"However, we are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward and aid us in our investigations.
"We have not proffered any charges and we have to speak to a lot of people yet," Insp O'Neill said.
