A Canadian tourist was hit over the head today with a baseball bat during a robbery in Belfast.

A Canadian tourist was hit over the head today with a baseball bat during a robbery in Belfast.

The 25-year-old man was treated in the city's Royal Victoria Hospital after he and his 27-year-old sister were targeted by a gang in the west of the city.

They had been walking along Bearnagh Drive after visiting relatives when they were assaulted and robbed. The tourist's sister was pushed against a wall as the gang stole jewellery, cash and a mobile phone.

The victim's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The PSNI later arrested four teenagers - one aged 15, two aged 16 and another 17 - for questioning. They also recovered screwdrivers, a baseball bat and knives.

Witnesses to the assault were urged to help the police with their investigation.

An 18-year-old man in Ballymena, Co Antrim was also recovering today after he was allegedly hit in the face with a shovel. The attack occurred in the early hours of this morning in the North Road area of the town.

A 21 year old man was being questioned by police about the incident.

Meanwhile, a taxi driver and his passengers in Derry were lucky to escape unharmed after his cab was targeted last night by brick throwing youths in the Waterside area of the city.

The vehicle had stopped at traffic lights in Crescent Link at around 7.50pm when the mob launched its attack. The rear window of the cab was smashed and the bodywork was also damaged in the incident.
