Dun Laoghaire launched its 1,500th year as a town with the unfurling of a flag at noon yesterday. Numerous festivities are planned for the year, including a maritime school, a gathering of the O'Leary and O'Neill clans, both of which were involved in founding Dun Laoghaire, and a horse show.
The Dun Laoghaire 1500 flag was hoisted on the East Pier yesterday by the chairman of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Council, Mr Donal Marren, and blessed in an ecumenical ceremony.
The organisers of Dun Laoghaire 1500 promise street parties and festivals virtually every weekend during the summer months.
The national days of several countries will be celebrated.
