The trade surplus grew to €3.69 billion in March, its highest level since May 2002, according to the latest trade figure published today.
Exports were ahead by 5.8 per cent on a three-month average annual basis in March, while imports have fallen by 4.1 per cent. The recovery in trade volumes reflects the recent recovery in the global economy.
Somewhat surprisingly, much of the growth in exports seems to be stemming from Europe.
Exports to Belgium increased from €1,358 million to €2,156 million (+59 per cent ) and to Italy from €540 million to €655 million (+21 per cent ).
The euro's strength dampened trade with Ireland main trading partners outside the euro zone. Exports to Britain decreased from €2,163 million to €2,045 million (-5 per cent ) and to the United States from €2,954 million to €2,497 million (-15 per cent ).
