The Society of the Irish Motor Industry has claimed the Dublin Transportation Office is misleading the public with an advertising campaign which says 1,000 extra cars are coming on to the roads every week and causing the severe traffic problems.

The society is considering lodging a formal complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority in response to the advertisement which implies 50,000 extra cars a year are coming into Dublin at rush hour.

According to the SIMI, figures for 1998 show the increase in car numbers in Dublin was fewer than 20,000, or 385 a week.
