A group of Travellers who have taken over a section of open woodland in Killarney National Park over the past 10 days say they will move on as soon as one of their members gives birth to the twins she is expecting.
A spokesman for the group yesterday said they had not been asked by the authorities to move on and they were on "a bit of a holiday for the children" for a couple of weeks. The group of about 60 has gathered from other parts of Ireland as well as the UK.
They holiday in Killarney each year at this time, and have previously been in other parts near the National Park. The spokesman said the group was too large to stay in a regular caravan park, and could not afford to do so. They accepted their presence might give rise to concern, but they were not interfering with anyone.
