Tributes have been paid to Paddy O'Keeffe, former editor of the Irish Farmers' Journal, who died at his home in Ballyhooley, Co Cork, on Sunday.

A key figure in the farming sector, Mr O'Keeffe (89) was chairman of the Agricultural Trust which publishes the Irish Farmers' Journal and The Irish Field. In association with John Mooney, he set up the trust in 1961. He was also the founding chairman of the FBD insurance company in 1967.

Mr O'Keeffe was appointed editor of the journal in 1951 and retired from that role in 1988 but continued in the role of chief executive until 1993. He wrote a column in the weekly newspaper until his death.

He served as chairman of the Agricultural Institute, a precursor to Teagasc, and also served on the board of Bord na gCapall.
