Trócaire is encouraging people to join its 24-hour fast today to
raise money for its world development programmes.
It aims to combat injustice, poverty and natural disasters.
The annual 24-hour fast is this year endorsed by Irish pop celebrities Samantha Mumba and Westlife.
Its theme is the same as that of the Lenten Campaign – slavery.
Trócaire is working for the release of 20 million people held in bonded labour around the world.
With events and advertisement campaigns running across the State the charity is hoping for a large participation in the fast which last year raised £860,000 – an all time high.
Over the past 11 years, the fast has raised over £4 million.
While paying tribute to traditional enthusiasm and support for the event Trócaire has cautioned people to take care during the fast.
It advises the elderly, the pregnant or children under 12 years not participate in the fast.
