Gardaí are expected to advise motorists later today on the likely impact of a protest on the M50 and Dublin Port Tunnel by a group of disaffected hauliers tomorrow morning.
The Road Transport Association (RTA), a group made up of hundreds of former Irish Road Hauliers Association (IRHA) members, plan to disrupt traffic on the M50 from 5am.
The organisers, who say they will have 1,000 trucks in the protest, plan to drive at very slow speeds from the entrance of the Port Tunnel to the Red Cow roundabout and back along the M50 northbound to Dublin port.
The group's spokesman, Michael McMahon, said he could not say how long the protest would last but it would be reviewed as it developed.
The protesters are seeking the abolition of haulier tolls on the M50 and a lifting of the ban on large trucks entering the capital. They also want to pressurise the Government into appointing a haulage industry regulator.
He said the Government's heavy goods vehicle strategy has led to hold-ups on both the north and southbound carriageways and these delays are putting hauliers out of business.
The protest does not have the support of the IRHA, which said it would inconvenience ordinary commuters.
"While we are in sympathy with the plight of hauliers, our organisation does not support this protest but instead we are involved in discussions with Government to get a resolution to those problems," a spokesman said.
The RTA claims a membership of 200 hauliers.
