Jordan driver Jarno Trulli upset the form guide in the
opening practice sessions for the Malaysian Grand Prix, shunting favoured Ferrari pair Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello from the top slot today.
Schumacher and Barrichello were in a private duel exchanging the quickest time for most of the two one-hour sessions until Trulli broke their stranglehold in the closing minutes.
The Italian sped around the 5.54 kilometre circuit in one minute 38.846 seconds, confirming the Jordan's encouraging early season performance after stablemate Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished fifth in Australia two weeks ago.
World champion Schumacher had to settle for the second quickest time at 1:38.929, 0.083 seconds behind the Jordan.
Barrichello, with a best time of 1:38.931, was the the third fastest.
The McLaren pair of David Coulthard (1:39.300) and Hakkinen (1:39.861) were fourth and sixth, split by the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine (1:39.520) who won here for Ferrari two years ago.
