The Irish Times Trust has established a journalism fellowship in honour of the memory of Douglas Gageby who served as editor of The Irish Times from 1963 to 1974 and from 1977 to 1986 and who died last year.
The Douglas Gageby Irish Times Fellowship is inviting applications from print journalists at an early stage of their career. It offers applicants the opportunity to spend between three and six months in a third world country or region working on a project of international significance.
The idea of the fellowship is that it will give a journalist the opportunity to obtain a better understanding of the developing world, its problems and its requirements. The recipient will write articles for the benefit of readers of The Irish Times.
The fellowship will provide the successful applicant with such financial support as is necessary along with expenses for travel and accommodation.
