Turkey's parliamentary constitutional committee recommended general elections be held on July 22nd instead of June 24th as proposed by the ruling AK Party, committee chairman Burhan Kuzu said today.
The proposal, which is expected to be approved by the general assembly this week, could prolong the political gridlock in European Union-applicant Turkey.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan called for early elections last night in an attempt to resolve a stand-off between his Islamist-rooted government and the secularist establishment, which includes the powerful armed forces.
Earlier today, the AK Party suggested June 24th for the poll, but the constitutional committee picked the later date on the recommendation of the High Election Board.
