Turkey yesterday hinted that it could harden its conflict with Greece following the failure of efforts by EU and Turkish officials to agree on its EU membership application. The EU will not have the right to tell Turkey to "improve your relations with Greece" if the it does not acknowledge Ankara's candidacy, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr Ismail Cem, said. The EU was ready to include Turkey in a new pan European Conference alongside the 11 other countries seeking to join, but this was rejected by Ankara, which is demanding to be put on the same footing as the 10 central European countries and Cyprus.
