TV3 has launched a new "online catch-up" service which allows viewers to watch the channel's content online after it has aired on television.

Similar to RTÉ's catch-up application, which went live in April 2009, the 3player enables users of TV3 and its sister channel 3e to view many of the station's flagship programmes online.

In addition to being able to view programmes via PCs and notebooks, the 3Player will also work on smartphones and tablet devices such as Apple's iPad.

Among the shows available to watch via the application are Coronation Street, Ireland AM, The X Factor, Emmerdale, Xposé and Tonight with Vincent Browne. A number of programmes including the Morning Show and News at 5.30 can also be accessed as they are broadcast.

While most programmes are available for up to 28 days after they have been aired, broadcast rights restrictions mean that some shows such as The X Factor will only be available for one week.

Due to copyright issues, the service is also only available when accessing the internet from Ireland.

The 3Player allows users to link content via social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

"With 3player our viewers have a world-leading online video player environment to catch all the best of TV3 and 3e's shows and more such as Premier League goals," said director of online Stephen Grant.

"Our investment in this new, richer environment for catching up with our great content reiterates TV3 commitment to bringing our viewers the best possible entertainment experience, whether they prefer to watch on TV or online on PC's or mobile devices," he added.

RTÉ has previously stated it is working to make its player application available across multiple platforms "in the future."

3player is available now on tv3.ie/3player
