Police have arrested two men in connection with the killing of a Protestant man, Mr David McDowell, who was battered to death in the Shankill Road area of Belfast last week.
Both men are believed to be victims of republican paramilitary-style punishment shootings. They were arrested in hospital where they were being treated after being shot on Thursday night in republican areas of west Belfast.
Mr McDowell (34) was attacked as he carried a bed headboard towards a house he was moving into.
An RUC spokesman said the motive for the killing might become clear when all lines of inquiry were completed.
