Gardai investigating the theft of cigarettes from a hijacked train in Dunleer, Co Louth, last month arrested two men near Navan on Saturday afternoon. They are from Dublin and were detained in Navan Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
A Garda spokesman confirmed the arrests were made after a planned search of a shed between Kentstown and Navan. The search, by members of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, uncovered what is believed to be the proceeds of recent robberies in Dublin.
The men were still in custody yesterday and were expected to be questioned about the alleged possession of firearms in Dun leer at the time of the robbery. The cigarettes, valued at approximately £850,000, have not been recovered.
