Two people have been arrested by detectives in the North investigating the bid to steal £300,000 from a security firm by taking a driver's son hostage, police said today.

Several guns and other items were seized during swoops in the Ballycolin Road area of Lisburn, Co Down.

Last week hundreds of police officers were drafted in during a tense 16-hour operation to rescue a 22-year-old man kidnapped by an armed gang and recover the ransom cash.

Five armed men had burst into the Co Down home of a man who works for a leading Northern Ireland security company on Thursday and tied up his family.

The employee's son was taken hostage by the gang who warned they would kill him if their demands weren't met.

But after being alerted to the drama, police from across the North managed to free the hostage unharmed.

The cash was also recovered and five arrests made.
