Carlow GAA is coming to terms with the loss of two leading footballers today after both were killed in separate incidents overnight.
County captain Andrew Cordon and Fighting Cocks fullback Pat Birmingham were killed in incidents in the early hours of this morning.
Cordon (24) died in an incident in a premises on Carlow Town’s Dr Cullen Road. Cordon and another man are believed to have been driving a fork-lift when it overturned. Cordon is believed to have died at the scene.
His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post-mortem is expected to take place later today.
Cordon led his county out against Westmeath in the opening round of the Bank of Ireland Football Championship last weekend. The O’Hanrahan’s club man is survived by his partner and one child.
Birmingham was killed in a road traffic accident near Banbridge, Co Down. The 27-year-old had been travelling from Belfast to Carlow on his motorcycle to play in a club match later today. The incident occurred on the A1 dual-carriageway at Loughbrickland at approximately 7 a.m. this morning. No other vehicles were involved.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
