Ms Johnston is believed to have resided previously at an address in Dundalk. It is understood she sustained severe head injuries inflicted by a wooden implement.

In the High Court in Belfast, the woman's former lover applied for bail to attend her funeral. A lawyer said Brian Kelly (22), from Beaufort Walk, Newtownards, Co Down, and Ms Johnston had lived together for two years but separated after an incident which led to him being charged with threatening to kill her.

Lord Justice Campbell said Kelly could be released on compassionate bail once the court was officially informed of the place and time of the funeral.
