Two men were charged at Cork District Court yesterday with the manslaughter of an elderly woman, Ms Margaret Murphy, during a burglary at her home in Cork last August.
Mr Declan Meehan (23), from St Declan's Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, and Mr John Arundel (24), from Bakers Road, Gurranabraher, have already been charged in connection with the burglary at Ms Murphy's home at Barretts Buildings on August 1st last.
Cash and property to the value of £334 were stolen. Det Garda Denis O'Shea said the men made no reply to the charges.
Inspt Michael Kelleher said the DPP had ordered a summary trial in respect of the burglary charge. He asked that substantial bail be set because of the seriousness of the new charge.
Judge Morrough Connellan set bail at £1,000, with independent sureties of £5,000. He ordered the defendants to report daily to a local Garda station and to stay away from anyone connected with the case. He remanded Mr Meehan and Mr Arundel in custody with consent to bail to Cork District Court on December 9th.
