Two men, one from Northern Ireland and one a serving Irish soldier, were charged at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday in connection with the murder of Mr Terence Madden, who was shot dead in Co Sligo last month.
Mr Madden (52), a father of three and community activist, was shot in both legs as he got into his car in the driveway of his home at Monasteraden, Co Sligo on January 28th and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Michael Joseph Herron (30), a single man from Belleek, Co Fermanagh, with an address at Chapel Street, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal was charged with murdering Mr Madden. He was also charged with having a sawn-off shotgun with intent to endanger life on the same date.
Mr Michael Doohan (33), a single man and member of the Defence Forces, of Ashbury Lawn, Ballinode, Co Sligo, was charged with intentionally causing serious harm to Mr Madden. Sgt James Kerins told the court that Mr Herron was arrested last Sunday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and his detention was extended on Monday for a further 24 hours.
He said he released Mr Herron from the Secion 30 arrest on Tuesday night at Manorhamilton Garda station and arrested him under Section 4 of the Criminal Law Act of 1997 for having a firearm on January 28th.
Sgt John Barry said Mr Doohan was arrested on February 13th under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and his detention was extended by a further 24 hours on February 14th. His detention was extended by a further 24 hours after an application to a district judge at Manorhamilton District Court.
Sgt Barry said he released Mr Doohan from the Section 30 arrest at 4.24 p.m. at Manorhamilton Garda station on Tuesday and arrested him under a section of the Criminal Law Act for causing serious harm to Mr Madden.
Mr Stephen McCann, for Mr Doohan, said he would be making an application for bail. The court remanded both men in custody until March 18th.
